Binnington Shuts Out Rangers

The Owen Sound Attack blanked the Kitchener Rangers 4-0 on Saturday night. Jordan Binnington made 35 saves in his third career Ontario Hockey League shutout.

The Attack took a 1-0 lead late in the first period, capitalizing on a power play opportunity. Rangers starting netminder John Gibson made the initial save on Zach Nastasiuk, but Gemel Smith was on the doorstep to bury the rebound. His 13th goal of the season was also assisted by Chris Bigras.

Kitchener led shots on goal 16-15 after the opening frame.

Catenacci extended Owen Sound’s lead to 2-0 five minutes into the second period. The Attack forced a neutral zone turnover and it was the veteran forward snapping a high shot past Gibson on the short side. Joseph Blandisi and Cameron Brace collected assists on Catenacci’s 15th of the year.

Brace recorded his second point of the evening with a short-handed goal just before the midway point of the contest, pushing the Attack to a three-goal lead. The third-year centre chipped the puck out of his team’s zone and chased it down, lifting his shot high over the glove hand of Gibson. The Toronto native was the league’s most proficient short-handed scorer last season, and leads the Attack with 16 total goals this season. Bigras earned his second assist of the night on the play.

The Attack out-shot the Rangers 12-7 in the second period.

Owen Sound added another goal early in the third to take a 4-0 lead. Catenacci set up the tally, moving the puck to Daniel Zweep in the slot. The overage forward’s wrist shot bounced off Gibson and in, giving him his second goal of the year. Brayden Rose was also credited with an assist. Catenacci leads all Attack skaters with 36 points this season.

The Rangers (14-6-1-1) led shots on goal 12-2 in the final 20 minutes, but Binnington stopped all 35 shots he faced to pick up his third career shutout. Gibson stopped 25 of 29 shots he faced for Kitchener.
