Cascagnette’s Steelheads down Rangers in exhibition play
Adam Varga tallied the game winning goal and added an assist as the Mississauga Steelheads skated to a 2-1 win over the Kitchener Rangers in front of 463 fans at Westwood Arena on Wednesday night.
Anthony Dumont-Bouchard played in his first game for the Rangers since being acquired on Monday from the Barrie Colts. The Levis, QC native stopped 23 shots but was saddled with the loss.
Jacob Ingman earned the win in goal, stopping 14 shots in the third period and a game total of 27.
Jacob Cascagnette opened the scoring in his first game against his former team, as the Kitchener native made it 1-0 from Varga and former Rangers’ prospect Merrick Rippon at 6:36 of the first period.
Midway through the second period the Steelheads took a 2-0 lead as a Ryan McLeod shot bounced off Varga, who was perched atop the blue paint, and found the back of the net. The power play marker came at 10:05 of the second to round out scoring in the first 40 minutes with assists to McLeod and Thomas Harley.
Shots on goal in the first period of play were 10-7 Mississauga in the first, and 9-6 in the second for a two-period total of 19-13.
Just past the midway point of the third period Cole Carter was high-sticked and the Rangers were off to the power play. Riley Damiani’s one-timer from the hashmarks spoiled the shutout bid by Ingham, cutting the Mississauga lead to 2-1 at 12:28. Joseph Garreffa and Adam Liška picked up the assists on the power play goal.
The Rangers pulled Dumont-Bouchard in favour of an extra attacker in an attempt to tally the equalizer but to no avail, as the Steelheads skated to the 2-1 win.
Third period shots on goal were 15-6 Kitchener for a game total of 28-25, Mississauga.
The Rangers and Steelheads each went 1-for-6 on the man advantage.
The Rangers’ final road game of the exhibition schedule goes Friday, September 15th at 7pm when they face the Niagara IceDogs at Beamsville Arena.
Kitchener’s lone home exhibition game at The Aud takes place on Saturday, September 16th at 2pm. Prior to the game the team will host its annual Fan Fest and Barbecue supporting Children’s Wish at 11am. More details can be found here.
The Rangers open their 2017-18 regular season schedule with their home opener on Friday, September 22nd when they play host to the Flint Firebirds at 7:30pm.
