Evan McEneny’s first career goal led the Kitchener Rangers to a 3-1 victory over the Erie Otters on Friday night. McEneny and Tobias Rieder each scored and an assist, while import centre Radek Faksa recorded three points in the win, the Rangers’ ninth straight at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium.
The Rangers opened the scoring late in the first period when Radek Faksa’s pass found defenceman Evan McEneny at the point. His long shot was tipped by Matt Puempel past Erie netminder Devin Williams. The Ottawa Senators prospect leads the team with 17 goals this season.
Kitchener out-shot Erie 23-12 through the first 20 minutes.
McEneny’s first career Ontario Hockey League goal extended the Rangers lead to 2-0 at the 6:28 mark of the middle frame. Faksa set up the power play tally, moving the puck to the veteran rearguard in the slot where he snapped a quick backhand shot by Williams. The second assist was credited to Tobias Rieder.
The Rangers continued to lead shots on goal 18-8 in the second period.
The Otters got on the board early in the third when freshman forward Connor McDavid capitalized on heavy traffic in front of the Kitchener net, hammering a puck by starting goaltender Franky Palazzese. McDavid leads all OHL rookies with 13 goals this season. Assisting on the play was the league’s Player of the Week, Connor Brown.
Tobias Rieder added a last-second empty net goal to seal a 3-1 Rangers victory. Kitchener out-shot Erie 15-10 in the final frame, and finished the game with a 56-30 overall advantage. Palazzese made 29 saves in his third consecutive win.
The Rangers (14-5-1-1) have won six straight contests and improve to 9-0 at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium this season.
