Media and Communications Coordinator

OBJECTIVE

To produce and deliver the internal and external communications for the Kitchener Rangers.

OVERVIEW

The Kitchener Rangers are seeking a communications professional with strong knowledge of hockey, with focus on the Rangers, the OHL and CHL. This individual will be an integral part of our in-house team who will consistently deliver creative communications solutions that represent the Rangers brand.
Reporting to the Director of Marketing and Communications, the Media and Communications Coordinator will work with business operations staff to conceptualize and execute compelling content across all Rangers lines of business. The role requires the candidate to be a highly skilled writer, interviewer and creative thinker who can connect concepts with business objectives in a fast-paced exciting environment.

JOB TASKS

Editorial Content / Writing

Preparation and distribution of all editorial content, including but not limited to game day magazines and programs, media and season ticket holder releases and notices, newsletters, website, alumni news, events and team and league programming. Conduct and transcribe interviews with players, hockey operations staff, alumni and community partners as needed. Create quality and original content on daily/weekly basis.

Media Relations
Compose and deliver to media and email subscribers press releases
Prepare publications including game night programs and inserts, media guides, alumni and subscribers’ newsletters.
Generate editorial content (i.e.: player profiles, weekly features, media releases) for website and CHL electronic weekly newsletter, OHL News
Respond to requests for information from media or designate another appropriate spokesperson or information source in a timely manor to meet deadlines.
Coordinate game night media credential requests, interview requests, and information and photographic requests.
Assist other organizational departments with press conference set-ups and hosting league events or meetings
Plan and direct development and communication of informational programs to maintain favourable public and Subscriber perceptions of the organization’s accomplishments.
Understand the objectives, promotional polices and needs of the organization to develop public relations strategies that will influence public opinion or promote ideas, products and services offered.
Consult with sponsors or staff to arrange promotional campaigns or appearances in all types of media for products.
Generate Media visibility – engage media partners, garner support for events, games, community programs and more.

Social Media
Build and maintain the Rangers social community presence (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Youtube etc.)
Responsible for the social monitoring, listening, and moderation activities for the Kitchener Rangers social communities on multiple platforms. Work closely with staff, customer service, and other stakeholders to manage community moderation, engagement and growth efforts. Provide detailed reporting on the Kitchener Rangers social content analytics and optimization.

Respond to industry trends in social and new media reporting and distribution, ensuring that the Kitchener Rangers platforms speak to fan demands, while maintaining consistent branding voice and best practices.

Create and maintain content for social and digital channels. Activate marketing programming, collaborate with staff (Marketing, Events & Sponsorship) to coordinate and implement best practices with a focus on emerging technologies and capitalizing on current trends.

Press Releases/Support Materials
Create and distribute external and internal communications to Rangers media partners, community, alumni, subscribers, sponsors and other stakeholders. Produce content for speeches, game day scripting, event scripting, hall of history descriptions, reports, letters, applications and more.

Archives and Media Content
Update history website, lists and media packages, as well as maintain updated content throughout building.

Website
Website management including timely updates, maintaining accurate and up to date information for all editorial content.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE

Diploma or Degree – journalism, communications or related experience

Hockey Knowledge – Knowledge of the OHL and proper reporting techniques and vernacular
Interpersonal Skills – Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with persons and groups directly or indirectly involved in the planning, maintenance, operation, and daily development of the Kitchener Rangers Hockey Club. Ability to work well with a team.

English Language – Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar (written/verbal).

Administration and Time-management – Knowledge of organization’s and management’s principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, leadership and coordination of people and resources.
Social Media – Understanding/experience in social media management across a variety of platforms.

SKILLS

Writing and Speaking – Communicating effectively as appropriate for the needs of the audience. Excellent writing and editing skills are essential.
Active Listening – Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions when appropriate.
Judgment and Decision Making – Considering the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one for the organization
Coordination and Time Management – Adjusting actions/schedule in relations to others’ actions and to ensure deadlines are met.
Ability to multi task, and meet deadlines – Ability to work irregular hours including nights and weekends during the hockey season to ensure deadlines are met.
Must be a hard-working, creative, outgoing, ambitious professional who can take the initiative and/or be directed
Proficient in MS Office XP
Must have a valid driver’s license and vehicle
Must have a keen sense of confidentially

Mascot Staff

 

OVERVIEW

The Kitchener Rangers’ Mascots connect with Rangers fans at home games during the hockey season. This part-time, seasonal role also includes various community events throughout the year to bring the excitement of Rangers hockey to the public.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Ability to perform physically demanding work.

Ability to work on your feet for extended periods of time.

Strong ability to communicate with high standards of professionalism.

Attention to detail is mandatory.

Ability to work well with the public, especially children.

Previous event and customer service experience is preferred.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE

Candidates must be open to flexible scheduling, including evening, weekend and holiday home games.

Organized and efficient with the ability to take the initiative on tasks.

Game Operations Volunteers

 

OVERVIEW

Kitchener Rangers’ Game Operations Volunteers offer a hands-on experience with an Ontario Hockey League franchise while also building your resume with reputable volunteer experience.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Prepare and operate our hospitality rooms (Don Cameron and Les Bradley Room).

Sell programs.

Conduct sound check/run through with live entertainment (anthem singer, choirs, bands, color guards, etc.).

Assist with live promotional giveaways.

Enthusiastically interact with fans during live promotional giveaways.

Ensure all items have been accounted for and stored.

Review game script and prepare game day materials i.e.: promotional contestant forms, promotional waivers, promotional props (sticks for shootouts, etc.), prizing elements, game day memos for live entertainment, mini game teams.

Work alongside our game presentation team to ensure proper timing for promotions and presentations.

The opportunity to work other team events (Season Ticket Holder Skate, Special Hockey Charity Game, etc.).

Assist with set-up for special events (Season Ticket Holder appreciation nights, etc.)

Liaise with corporate partners on event nights.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE

Strong communication and organization skills.

Able to multi-task in a fast pace environment.

Organized and efficient with the ability to take the initiative on tasks.

Must have reliable transportation to get to the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium for games and events.

Must be able to commit to full 2018-2019 season, arriving no later than two hours before each home game (34 home games).

Must be able to maintain professionalism when working with and around athletes, coaching staff and management.

Must be willing to work hard, be on time and present him/herself professionally.

Must be able to lift a minimum of 25 pounds and perform some manual labour, as an essential function of the position.
