The Kitchener Rangers who were making their third visit to the Memorial Cup final in four years hosted the 1984 Memorial Cup final. The Rangers, who had won the Memorial Cup in 1982, had captured the Ontario Hockey League regular season title.

Joining the Rangers from the OHL were the Ottawa 67`s who last appeared in the final in 1977 when they lost in the final game to the New Westminster Bruins. The 67`s won the J. Ross Robertson Cup by defeating Kitchener 8 to 4 in an eight point series.

The representatives from the Western Hockey League was the Kamloops Junior Oilers as they had defeated the Regina Pats in the finals. The Oilers scored overtime wins in games six and seven to advance to the Memorial Cup Tournament.

The Laval Voisins defeated the Longueuil Chevaliers in six games to earn the right to represent the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League at the Memorial Cup. The Voisins` line up included Mario Lemieux who had set a Canadian Hockey League record for points in a season with 282 and in 14 playoff games he recorded 52 points.

In the round robin tournament the Rangers emerged as the top team with a perfect 3-0 record to earn one of the two spots in the final. Ottawa finished in second place with two wins and a loss and they would meet Kamloops in the semi final as the Oilers ended the round robin with a 1-2 record while Laval was winless in three games.

In the semi final and final the 67`s recorded identical 7-2 wins to win the first Memorial Cup for the City of Ottawa since the Ottawa-Hull Canadiens won the title in 1958.

For Ottawa center Adam Creighton the Memorial Cup title would have special meaning as his father Dave had won the Memorial Cup in 1949 as a member of the Port Arthur West End Bruins. This was the second father-son combination to have their names engraved on the Memorial Cup, as they would join the Emms - Hap and Paul - who won Memorial Cup titles with the Barrie Flyers in 1953 and the Niagara Falls Flyers in 1968.
