The Peter DeBoer era has begun in Kitchener.
The Rangers used their 1st selection (12th overall) of the 2002 OHL Priority Selection Draft to select 6’ 0” centre Evan McGrath of Oakville, ON.
McGrath, 16, played Jr. “A” last season with Oakville and accumulated 87 points including 43 goals in only 49 games.
The Rangers used their 2nd round choice (32nd overall) to select North York native G Carlo Di Rienzo.
Last year as a member of the North York Rangers Bantams, Di Rienzo played in 34 games, posted a 2.35 GAA and recorded 4 shutouts.
“We are extremely pleased with today’s selections,” said head scout Mike Sadler. “We came into the draft very comfortable with our list and where we had our players rated and feel our scouting staff had its best draft to date.”
“As they say, the proof in the pudding is 2 years from now,” noted Sadler.
Of the 18 draft picks today, DeBoer and staff selected three goalies, seven defencemen, and eight forwards.
“We are excited about welcoming 18 new members to the Rangers organization and are looking forward to training camp in September,” commented head coach/general manager Peter DeBoer on todays selections.
