2019 OHL Gold Cup Day 3 Recap

GTHL Blue finished with a perfect 3-0 record as a result of Saturday’s victory over HEO while NOHA, OMHA White and the ALLIANCE were also victorious to round out preliminary play at the 2019 OHL Gold Cup in Kitchener.

 

ZITO’S WINNER KEEPS GTHL BLUE UNDEFEATED
GTHL BLUE 3 (3-0-0-0) – HEO 1 (1-2-0-0)

Pasquale Zito (WSR) scored the game winner midway through the third period as GTHL Blue improved to a perfect 3-0 with a 3-1 victory over HEO.

HEO’s Josh Reid (MISS) opened the scoring 12:14 into the first period before Tucker Robertson (PBO) knotted things at one just over a minute later.

A scoreless second gave way to Zito’s game winner 9:29 into the third before Brennan Othmann (FLNT) hit the open net to seal the deal. Othmann sits tied for the tournament lead in scoring with seven points (3-4–7) following Saturday’s action.

Forbes Andersen (ER) earned the win with 21 saves in goal opposite HEO’s Patrick Leaver (OSH) who stopped 26.

MARTIN SCORES LATE AS NOHA STUNS GTHL RED
NOHA 3 (2-1-0-0) – GTHL RED 2 (2-1-0-0)

Mitchell Martin (KIT) wired a hard wrister inside the far post from the high slot with 3:40 left in the third period, a goal that would stand as the game winner as NOHA stunned GTHL Red 3-2.

Goaltender Jake Marois was the story in this one, turning aside 41 shots as NOHA defied the odds, defeating GTHL Red despite being badly outshot 43-12.

Devon Savignac (NB) got things started 4:28 into the first period as NOHA came away up 1-0 after 20 minutes despite being outdone 15-3 on the shot clock.

Shane Wright (KGN) put GTHL Red on the scoresheet just 22 seconds into the second before Ethan Marois reinstated the NOHA lead 1:30 later. GTHL Red blueliner Brandt Clarke (BAR) tied things up at two with 3:40 left in the second period and that’s how things would stay until Martin stepped up to help his team win its second game of the showcase.

GTHL Red’s first loss featured a pair of assists from Josh Bloom (SAG) as they threw everything at the NOHA net but came up short. Clarke (BAR) sits tied for the tournament lead in scoring following Saturday’s action. He leads all defenders with seven points (2-5–7).

PATEY POTS THREE AS OMHA WHITE DOWNS HNO
OMHA WHITE 6 (2-0-0-1) – HNO 2 (0-3-0-0)

Cole Patey (PBO) hit the empty net with 3:11 remaining to complete his hat-trick and give OMHA White the win they were looking for, defeating HNO 6-2.

North Central Predators teammate Connor Punnett (SAG) drew first blood for OMHA White just 52 seconds into the first period before Patey followed up with an assist from Josh Ziliotto (NB) at 4:25.

Ethan Burroughs (OS) and HNO’s Jack Michaelis swapped second period goals. Alex Atwill (LDN) brought HNO within one 1:28 into the third but OMHA White would pull away, scoring three unanswered with a pair from Patey and one from Daniel Michaud (OSH).

The chippy, hard-hitting affair saw OMHA White outshoot HNO 48-21. Ethan Larmand (SBY) and Nicholas Paone (PBO) both had two assists in the winning case while Matteo Drobac (HAM) made 19 saves to pick up the ‘W’.

ALLIANCE TOO MUCH FOR OMHA BLACK IN 3-1 VICTORY
ALLIANCE 3 (2-1-0-0) – OMHA BLACK 1 (0-2-1-0)

Kingston Frontenacs prospects Cayden Faust and Maddox Callens both scored before Ryan Burke (SBY) got in on the fun, powering the ALLIANCE to a 3-1 win over OMHA Black in Saturday’s finale.

It was a dominant first period showing from the ALLIANCE crew as they outshot their opponent 16-2 enroute to 35-16 in the game.

Ethan Lindsay (OS) provided OMHA Black’s lone goal 6:22 into the second period before Max Donoso (OTT) took things the rest of the way in the ALLIANCE crease, stopping 15 of 16. OMHA Black’s Justin DiLauro (MISS) took the loss with a 32-save effort.
