Final: Rangers 2, Knights 6

Kitchener, ON: The Rangers (38-15-5-2) went down 3-0 in the first period and couldn’t recover against the Knights (42-15-1-1) at The Aud on Tuesday night, losing 6-2.

Liam Hawel and Mike Petizian were the goal-scorers on the night.

Jacob Ingham saved 26 of 31 over two periods and Lucas Pfeil saved 9 of 10 in the final period.

It was the Knights who opened up the scoring at 12:16 when a shot by Connor McMichael rebounded off the pad of Jacob Ingham and went straight to Matyev Guskov (14) who scored to make it 1-0.

At 14:46 the Knights scored again, this time while shorthanded. Luke Evangelista (23) forced a neutral-zone turnover that led to a breakaway and the winger went forehand to backhand to beat Ingham high for a 2-0 lead.

The Knights extended their advantage as the period was winding down when, at 19:14, Ryan Merkley (15) split the Rangers defence and snapped a shot into the back of the net.

Shots after 20 minutes were 14-5 for the Knights.

The Rangers finally got on the board at 12:17 of the second when Liam Hawel (22) got through the Knights defenders and wristed a shot from the high slot past Brett Brochu to make it 3-1.

Serron Noel picked up an assist on the goal.

Just under two minutes later though, McMichael forced a turnover and broke into the Rangers end and wristed a shot far-side on Ingham to reestablish the Knights’ three-goal-lead at 4-1.

Ten seconds after that, Jonathan Gruden added yet another tally.

Shots after 40 minutes were 31-11 for the Knights.

With Lucas Pfeil in net to begin the third period, the Rangers got one back while on the power-play just before the mid-way mark of the frame. A shot by Mike Petizian (20) through traffic beat Brochu to make it a 5-2 scoreline.

Hawel and Axel Bergkvist recorded assists on the goal.

The final goal of the game would go to London’s Jason Willms who, after serving a penalty, took a pass across the blueline and beat Pfeil from mid-slot.

Final shots on goal were 41-21 in favour of the road side.

The next Rangers home game is this Friday March 6th at 7:30pm versus the Barrie Colts.

Their next road game is Sunday March 8th at 2:05 pm versus the Windsor Spitfires. That game will broadcast nationally on Sportsnet.
