Kitchener, ON: It was another rendition of a popular Midwest division rivalry between the Rangers (9-10-2-2) and the Owen Sound Attack (10-10-3-1) at The Aud on Friday night.
Liam Hawel scored in the first period, Isaac Langdon in the second period, and Riley Damiani late in the third period on an empty net to give the Rangers a 3-0 win.
Lucas Pfeil was perfect on the night, stopping all 24 shots he faced for his first career OHL shutout.
It didn’t take long for the Rangers to get on the board to start the game. After an Ethan Burroughs tripping penalty at 1:14, Liam Hawel (7) finished off a string of passes starting with Riley Damiani at the top of the face-off circle before going to Jonathan Yantsis at the side of Mack Guzda’s net and then out front to the right-winger who wristed it high into the back of the net. It was 1-0.
Despite a number of high-quality chances throughout the period, the Rangers couldn’t beat Guzda for another goal and after 20 minutes it remained 1-0.
Kitchener out-shot Owen Sound after a period, 13-6.
At 3:06, the Rangers struck again. This time, it was Isaac Langdon (2) from his knees capitalizing on a rebound from a Declan McDonnell shot. That made it 2-0.
Mike Petizian also earned an assist on the goal.
For the second period in a row, an early goal was followed by inaction on the scoreboard and, after 40 minutes, the Rangers continued to lead 2-0 while out-shooting the Attack 24-14.
With 1:08 remaining in the game, on just their fourth shot of the period, Damiani (10) scored on an empty Attack net to put the game out of reach at 3-0.
Pfeil stopped all 24 shots in his first shutout of the season. The Rangers tallied 29 shots of their own in the win.
The next home game for the Rangers is Sunday December 1st at 2:00 pm versus the Guelph Storm. The next road game is on Thursday, December 5 at 7:05 pm versus the Windsor Spitfires.
