Jack Wismer heads west to UBC for 2021-22

Ontario Hockey League

The University of British Columbia Thunderbirds men’s hockey program announced Friday at overage Kitchener Rangers winger Jack Wismer has committed for the 2021-22 season.

Dealt to the Rangers ahead of the recently cancelled 2020-21 campaign, Wismer previously played three seasons with the Flint Firebirds from 2017-20, enjoying career-highs in goals (27), assists (27) and points (54) over 62 games in 2019-20. The 6-foot, 190Ib. winger from Stoney Creek, Ont. is the League’s first player to commit to a Canada West program for next season. He recorded a total of 107 points (48-59–107) over 197 regular season contests after being Flint’s second round (41st overall) pick in the 2016 OHL Priority Selection.

“He reads the play really well,” Thunderbirds head coach Sven┬áButenschon noted. “He uses his size really smartly, getting inside position. I’ve seen him go against big, strong defencemen and not back down. You got a combination of a big body, a guy who sees the ice well, reads the game very well, and has got a great touch around the net, a great finishing touch. If he can bring that finishing touch here and find a way to score goals, we’ll be ecstatic.”

Wismer will be enrolling in UBC’s Faculty of Arts for the fall.

“Schooling is really good, and the hockey is good too, I’ve heard great things,” Wismer said of his new destination. “The program looks like it’s been doing really well so obviously that was pretty intriguing for me. I know it’ll be a lot different than the last couple years because it’s like you’re re-starting, you’re playing against older guys again. I think I’ll be ready for it, I’ll be in good shape and ready to go whenever the season gets started.”
