Pinelli and Canada Red fall to Sweden at WU17 Hockey Challenge

The 2019 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge continued in Medicine Hat, Alta. and Swift Current, Sask. on Monday as Canada Black came away victorious while Canada Red and Canada White both suffered losses.

Here’s a look at Monday’s action.

 

Canada Black 5, Czech Republic 4 – OT
Medicine Hat, Alta. – Danny Zhilkin (Guelph Storm) scored a pair of goals including the game-tying marker with 1:18 remaining in the third period before defenceman Brandt Clarke (Barrie Colts) scored the shootout winner, guiding Canada Black to a second straight win beyond regulation.

Canada Black came from behind to defeat the Czech Republic 5-4 as Clarke’s shootout tally followed others from Shane Wright (Kingston Frontenacs) and Zach Dean (Gatineau Olympiques).

“Our team has been resilient so far, said Canada Black head coach Jody Hull (Niagara IceDogs), “but I do not think we have played to our identity yet. We have had spurts of it during games, but not consistently from the drop of the puck to the final buzzer and we have to make a few corrections tomorrow before we get to the quarter-final.”

Max McCue (London Knights) also scored a goal in the win while Clarke, Ryan Winterton (Hamilton Bulldogs) and Brennan Othmann (Flint Firebirds) recorded helpers. James Malatesta (Quebec Remparts) rounded out Canada’s presence on the scoresheet while William Blackburn made 22 saves.

Canada Black outshot the Czechs 38-26, improving to 2-0 at the event.

Game Summary

 

Sweden 4, Canada Red 2
Swift Current, Sask. – Canada Red ran into a hot goalie as Sweden’s Carl Lindbom made 50 saves in a 4-2 win for his country.

Canada took the play to Sweden, outshooting them 52-34 as Connor Lockhart (Erie Otters) and Joshua Roy (Saint John Sea Dogs) scored late second period goals 14 seconds part, but Sweden surged ahead for good in the third to double-up Canada Red.

Sweden’s Oliver Moberg scored the winning goal with 2:30 remaining in the third period before Ludwig Persson hit the empty net.

Connor Punnett (Saginaw Spirit) picked up an assist in front of a 30-save performance from Jacob Goobie (Charlottetown Islanders) as  Canada Red fell to 1-1.

Game Summary

 

United States 6, Canada White 4
Medicine Hat, Alta. – Cole Sillinger of the host Medicine Hat Tigers scored twice, but the United States outpowered Canada White to take a 6-4 victory and improve to 2-0 at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

Chaz Lucius had a goal and two assists while Caden Brown and Colby Saganiuk each registered a goal and an assist as the Americans built off their 10-1 win over the Czech Republic on Sunday.

Jack Beck (Ottawa 67’s) and Riley Kidney (Acadie-Bathurst Titan) also scored Canada White goals as they fell to 0-2 out of the gate. William Rousseau made 20 saves in the loss.
