Rangers acquire Givani Smith from Guelph Storm

The Kitchener Rangers announced today they have acquired right winger Givani Smith from the Guelph Storm.

In exchange, the Storm will receive:

  • 2nd round pick (MIS) in the 2021 OHL Priority Selection
  • 2nd round pick (WSR) in 2024
  • Conditional 2nd round pick (KIT) in 2025

“Givani will be a welcome addition to our already deep group of forwards,” said general manager Mike McKenzie. “He is a big strong guy that can play a power game but can also score. We have a lot of skill up front already but adding Givani will give us an element we may have been missing before.

“He will be extremely valuable to our team down the stretch and makes us much harder to play against.”

A Toronto, ON native, Smith was originally a 1st round draft pick to the Barrie Colts in the 2014 OHL Priority Selection, 13th overall. He became a member of the Guelph Storm in a trade on January 9, 2015 along with C.J. Garcia and picks in exchange for Ben Harpur and Chadd Bauman.

A member of the Storm for parts of four seasons, the 19-year-old has registered 66 goals and 55 assists for 116 points with 375 penalty minutes in 218 regular season and playoff games, combined.

Smith is a 2nd round pick, 46th overall by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.
