McGrath selects OHL over NCAA

Kitchener, ON: A cornerstone of the future for the Kitchener Rangers Hockey Club has officially arrived with the announced signing of #1 pick C Evan McGrath.

McGrath, a highly skilled 6’ 1” centre from Oakville, played last year as a 15 year old with the Oakville Blades Jr. A team. With the Blades McGrath scored a team high 43 goals and added 44 assists in just 45 games. Those numbers were good for 3rd in league scoring and tops on the Blades. McGrath also captured Rookie of the Year honours for the OHA and was named the Top Prospect in the OHA.

“Our organization realized when we drafted Evan that he was heavily pursued by the NCAA. After being given the opportunity to meet with the McGrath family and demonstrate the academic and hockey options available here in Kitchener, I believe Evan is very comfortable that he can combine both while playing the Ontario Hockey League.” said Rangers head coach/general manager Peter DeBoer.

Going into the OHL Priority Draft McGrath’s intentions to attend university in the United States kept many other OHL teams away.

“Without the risk of Evan going to the NCAA a team needing a forward would have very easily made him the #1 overall pick in the draft” commented Rangers head scout Mike Sadler.

The Rangers first exhibition game will be Sunday, September 1st at 2pm when the Oshawa Generals, led by NHL potential 1st overall pick Nathan Horton, visit the Auditorium. Tickets are $5 per person or $10 per family.
