Rangers hold annual banquet at Bingemans

The Kitchener Rangers Hockey Club of the Ontario Hockey League held theirrAnnual Awards and Banquet at Bingemans Thursday night in Kitchener.

This year’s banquet marked the Rangers 39th year and was open to the general public with close to 400 people in attendance.

Don Cameron and Gary Doyle, the play-by-play radio team of the KitchenerrRangers on Newstalk 570, were Master of Ceremonies which included a numberrof presentations for individual awards.

Third year defenseman Steve Eminger captured the Jim Malleck Memorial Trophyras the team’s Most Valuable Player.

Besides the coveted Malleck MVP award, Eminger was awarded the Bob Schlieman Award as the team’s Best Offensive Defenceman. Eminger captured the award for the second year in a row after finishing this season with 58 points (19 goals and 39 assists). His 58 points also placed him 4th among OHL defencemen.

Ranger veteran Derek Roy, one of the most exciting players in the OntariorHockey League, also captured two awards; the Jim Reilly Trophy as the Team’s Leading scorer and the Rangers Most Popular Player Award. Roy had his best season offensively with 43 goals and 46 assists for 89 points in 62 games, good for 11th in OHL scoring despite missing 6 games. Roy captured the team’s scoring title for the 3rd year in a row and has registered 257rregular season points including 119 goals in 193 games as a Ranger.

Marcus Smith, who had an outstanding playoff versus the Guelph Storm, alsorcaptured two awards; the Herchenrader Trophy for Best Defensive Ability andrthe Charles Chalkin Award for Best Performer in the Playoffs.

Hard-working forward/defenceman Andre Benoit, who was the most versatilerplayer for the Rangers this season, was recognized for his efforts with therJim McGeachie Memorial Trophy for Outstanding Team Effort.

Three first year players were also honored during the night. ChadrMcCaffrey, a graduate of the Kitchener Greenshirts Midget team, captured therHarold Gowing Memorial Trophy as the KMHA Product with Most Improvement.

Rafal Martynowski, who responded with an increase in ice time in the second half of the year, received the Blueline Club Trophy as the team’s MostrGentlemanly Player.

And, with an impressive 20 goals and 38 assists for 58 points in 65 games,rRangers 1st round selection Michael Richards was honored with his offensiverprowess and overall contribution to the team in receiving the Michael Pappert Trophy as the Team’s Rookie of the Year.
