The Rangers and Sobeys Inc. launched the Sobeys/Kitchener Rangers Celebrity Golf Classic on July 11, 2001, the first of a 5-year commitment. While the majority of the funds were directed to the Big Brothers of Kitchener-Waterloo, it was determined the remaining funds, in the amount of $7,000, be presented to the Families of the New York Firefighters Disaster Relief Fund.

r

Late Thursday night, the Rangers decided to honor their great fan support by donating $1 on behalf of every fan who attended tonight’s game versus the Sarnia Sting. The Rangers and Sting played before 5,725 fans. Thus, an additional $5,725 was raised.

r

Newstalk 570 radio, who broadcasts all Ranger games at home and on the road, also joined the Rangers and Sobey’s Inc. on the ice to report their fundraising drive had exceeded the $100,000 mark for the families of fallen rescue workers in New York.

r

The grand total of $12,725 was presented to Randy Kalan, representing the Kitchener Fire Department and the families of the fallen New York Firefighters of September 11th during the 1st intermission of tonight’s game.
