Tobias Rieder Scores Game Winner in Rangers 4-2 Victory

The Kitchener Rangers defeated the Erie Otters 4-2 at the Aud on Friday night. The meeting was the first of a weekend home-and-home series between the Midwest Division rivals.

Josh Sterk opened the scoring just three minutes into the first period, sliding the puck under Ramis Sadikov. The unassisted goal was the rookie forward’s second of the season.

The Otters tied the score on the power play at the 12:26 mark, when Connor Brown tipped the puck pass the right pad of Kitchener goalie John Gibson. The winger’s fifth of the year was assisted by Travis Wood and Sondre Olsen.

The Rangers out-shot Erie 13-8 in the opening frame.

Kitchener would re-establish a lead late in the second when Radek Faksa found Andrew Crescenzi in front and he chipped it past Sadikov. The goal was Crescenzi’s seventh of the season and pushed his point-streak to three games. Faksa is also on a hot streak, with five points in three games. The second assist was credited to team scoring leader Tobias Rieder.

The Rangers continued to lead shots-on-goal through, with a 22-14 advantage in the period.

Kitchener pushed its lead to two with a short-handed goal in the third period. Rieder forced a turnover in the neutral zone and broke in alone, beating Sadikov five-hole. The goal was the German winger’s eighth of the year, bringing his point total to 15.

The Rangers made it 4-1 with a goal from Zach Lorentz, who banged in a rebound for his second goal in as many games. Eric Ming picked up his third point in three games with a helper on the play. Brent Pedersen also recorded an assist on the play.

A last minute goal from Mitch Eisenberg cut the Rangers lead to two, but that was as close as the Otters would get. The marker was Eisenburg’s first career OHL goal.

Kitchener out-shot Erie 12-11 in the third and finished with a 47-33 overall advantage.

With the victory, the Rangers improve to 8-5-0-0 this season, while the Otters fall to 1-12-0-0.
